Bush Wins - We ALL Lose!

by Dee Rajska
Nov 3, 2004

George W. Bush won a second term in the White House last night.

The race was so close all along that we all knew that this was a possibility. What was more surprising and disturbing, though, was that he won not only the White House, but also the popular vote - in fact, Americans supported his re-election by a margin of 3.6 million votes. This was shocking because, after all, George Bush lost the popular vote to Al Gore in 2000. Since that time, he hasn't exactly endeared himself to the public. His waging war on Iraq has been as unnecessary as it has been costly, both in dollars and in lives. In choosing to fight Iraq, he has all but completely failed to address the real threat of terror, as Osama bin Laden himself was happy to remind American voters just days before the election; his monetary policies have sent the dollar plummeting; his trade policies have the current trade deficit through the roof; and in four years in office, he has managed to wipe out a substantial budgetary surplus to create an unprecedented annual budget deficit nearing half a trillion dollars.

So why would such overwhelming numbers of American voters pick him to be their president?

According to the networks, American voters who chose Bush were guided by one main reason: "moral values". George W. Bush was willing to amend the constitution to exclude gay marriage, and that, according to American "morals", is something to be valued.

John Kerry is in no way a proponent of gay marriage - in fact, he has repeatedly stated that he would settle for civil unions - yet somehow, the need to deny the right for equality to gay Americans is so deeply entrenched in the country's collective psyche, that voters would prefer to re-elect a man who has shown a willingness to erode civil liberties, devalue the dollar, destroy foreign relations, and threaten the status of the United States as a nation of privilege - so long as he's willing to protect them from gay marriage, because gay marriage is against their "moral values".

Moral? VALUES???

Looking on the election results this afternoon, I'm grateful to be a Canadian. In this country, we also have 'moral values', but we also strive to be a nation where all people are valued.
